Study objective:

1.    To compare the solubility and fractional absorption of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and crystalline calcium carbonate (CCC).

Study description:

·       Solubility was evaluated by dissolving amorphous calcium carbonate and crystalline calcium carbonate in phosphoric acid.

·       Calcium absorption was measured using a capsule of marked radioactive calcium and then by measuring the levels ​​of calcium in the blood, bones, urine and feces.

 

Study results:

1.    Amorphous calcium is significantly more soluble than crystalline calcium carbonate.

2.    Absorption of amorphous calcium carbonate is better than that of crystalline calcium carbonate.

·       40% increase in gastrointestinal calcium absorption

·       30% increase in bone calcium absorption

·       27% increase in bone calcium retention

 

This study was published in JBMR, the world’s leading scientific journal for research of bone and calcium metabolism.
